During the initial years, the Society’s main projects were for running the educational institutions alone . But as the years passed by, the need for stepping into the arena of social welfare schemes was also felt for ensuring the Muslims their due share in the society. The scheme of awarding scholarships to the deserving students was its first such programme and it was a great success as there were tremendous response from the community and the well-wishers. Then the Society started diversifying its activities into new spheres and the organisation gradually extended its activities to all the districts of Kerala.
To engage in charitable and social service activities of every kind to help the poor and backward sections of the Society is the paramount mission of the MES. Charitable activities of MES have always been devoted for the cause of the extremely poor and the needy. Our charitable activities include providing shelter to the homeless, free treatment and surgery to poor patients, free education for their children, adoption of schools run in the coastal areas exclusively for the children of the fishermen, providing opportunity for self-employment to the poor and the like. Over the years, MES has provided financial assistance to innumerable people affected by various natural calamities and misfortunes at various places in the country. Here it is worthy of special mention that in the recent past, a highly competent medical team consisting of doctors, staff nurse and other allied paramedical staff from MES Medical College, Perinthalmanna, was deputed to the riot hit Assam to give immediate medical care to thousands of people living in concentration camps in that state.
MES Medical College Hospital has been providing free treatment in terms of Outpatient consultation, In-patient Treatment, etc. ever since the inception of the hospital. Free treatment is still being offered to the poor patients under various schemes. Also offering procedures and investigations at very affordable charges including Angiogram, Angioplasty, MRI & CT Scan, Dialysis, Major & minor surgeries etc.
MES District Committees play a pivotal role in the charitable activities of MES. MES District committee Malappuram has been providing free meals and medicines to the patients in the hospital. It has been found very helpful to the patients coming from financially backward conditions.
The Muslim Educational Society (Regd.), Calicut, in short MES, established in 1964, is the biggest Educational agency in India, running more than 150 educational institutions in India and abroad including Medical College, Dental College, Engineering Colleges, Nursing College, first grade PG Arts & Science Colleges, state-aided Higher Secondary schools, C.B.S.E. Schools and an array of job oriented institutions
At the time of inception of the Muslim Educational Society, the stratum of the Muslim & backward communities in the state at large was quite disturbing when compared to the privileged classes. The Muslims were extremely backward in the field of Education and they had only 3 Colleges and a handful of Schools under their management. But as a result of the persistent and intense awareness campaigns carried out through Seminars, Symposia, Educational Conferences and similar education promotional programmes , the Muslim Educational Society succeeded in bringing about a radical change in the outlook of the community and this inspired this great organization to take up modern education in a big way. Now it has been found that out of the total population of nearly 70 lakhs of Kerala Muslims, at least, 10 lakhs have been directly or indirectly benefited by the educational activities of the MES. The literacy rate of Kerala is cent percent which is the highest in the country and MES can proudly claim its share of credit for having contributed to it in great measure. Other indices of modernization like low infant mortality rate and high life expectancy etc. are also the highlights of the society in Kerala in achieving which, MES has also played a significant role. It can be proudly mentioned that it was the MES which is instrumental in enhancing the educational status of especially Muslim Women who were behind the doors till then, destined to be the home makers throughout their life. It is gratifying to note that their presence in the educational field which was hardly 1% at the time of inception of MES has now risen to a tempting 70%. Similarly their presence in the professional education field, especially in Medical and Engineering filed has also gone upto 70%.
MES has also envisaged to set up establishments to promote moral and spiritual values among the public, work for the welfare of women and children and establish and maintain Old age homes and rehabilitate destitutes.
In 1994, it was the setting up of the MES College of Engineering at Kuttippuram in Malappuram District, the first self-financing college in the private sector in Kerala, that kick started an historic revolution that was to follow in the state to promote education to the deprived class and MES has a real right and reason to be proud of this committed initiative to fulfill its mission. How aggressive and consistent was the growth that followed in the educational scenario of the state since then is part of history now . And in 2003, there emerged the MES flagship institution – the MES Academy of Medical Sciences, which now is comprising a Super specialty Post graduate Medical College, Dental College, College of Nursing, School of Nursing and institute of Para-medical sciences. The latest additions to the MES panel of professional institutions are the MES Institute of Technology and Management, Chathannur, Kollam, MES College of Engineering and Technology, Kunnukara, Ernakulam and MES College of Architecture, Kakkodi, Kozhikode.
All the Aided Post Graduate Colleges run by MES are accredited by the NAAC. All the MES colleges, including unaided self-financing colleges have consistently been achieving high percentage of results in the university examinations with many a student securing meritorious ranks.
The Muslim Educational Society (Regd.), Calicut,( MES ) was established in the year 1964 with the mission of bringing education achievable by the poor and the neglected segments of the society residing in erstwhile Malabar where the majority of people were peasants and labourers who could not afford to send their wards to High Schools and Colleges for higher education. The effort of the MES was a solemn movement launched to bring about a radical change to this pathetic situation. Now after 50 years of stellar service to the people of Kerala, MES has emerged into one of the biggest Educational organisation in India, running more than 150 educational institutions in India and abroad including Medical College, Dental College, Engineering Colleges, Nursing College, first grade PG Arts & Science Colleges, state-aided Higher Secondary schools, C.B.S.E. Schools and an array of job oriented institutions.
The year 2014 marks the 50th year of the formation of the Muslim Educational Society and a year-long Golden Jubilee Celebrations has been put into motion in a befitting manner across the state and abroad. The valedictory summit of the Golden Jubilee celebrations will be held from 22nd to 25th January 2015 at Kozhikode. Eminent personalities who have put an imprint in various fields in the national as well as the state arena are expected to take part in the valedictory ceremony. And above all a digitally developed audio-visual display of events of the byegone times duly documented in history in all its reality will be showcased during the ceremony for the public to view.
The golden jubilee mega valedictory ceremony will be spread over for 4 days and being organized at various different platforms in and around Kozhikode city, the major events of which include:
1 | PANORAMIC CULTURAL PARADES |
2 | NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL LEVEL CONFERENCENCES |
3 | TALENT MEET |
4 | EDUCATIONAL SESSIONS |
5 | SEMINARS |
6 | EXHIBITIONS |
7 | PROJECT PRESENTATIONS |
8 | GET -TOGETHER OF YOUTH AND LADIES’ WINGS |
9 | STUDENT-TEACHER CONFLUENCES |
10 | ARTS AND SPORTS MEETS |
This is the question that poses every one when MES celebrates the Golden Jubilee in 2014 and we at MES , with all modesty , say that MES has succeeded in steering through against many odds with the deepest conviction and concern for the uplift of the poor and the needy to bring education to their door steps during all these five decades. Golden Jubilee is only an occasion for us to have an introspection and to re-dedicate ourselves for the common people of our nation, and also to pledge ourselves to undertake loftier service for them.
The Muslim Educational Society’s commitment towards excellence in the establishment of educational institutions motivated them to take up the challenge of setting up a Medical College in Malappuram District. The college was established in 2003 with an annual intake is 100 students. A 500 bed hospital is attached to the college with all major Super specialties and all medical and surgical specialties encompassing the attendant physical facilities . Right from the setting up of this Teaching Hospital, we are providing treatment, diagnostic tests, medicines, surgery and similar services to the poor and the needy patients, free of cost. On an average, one lakh people per year from various walks of life have been benefited from these charity medical schemes. Last year, the Society has incurred an amount of Rs.9.25 Crs to meet these charity activities in this hospital alone.
In the year 2011, the MES Medical College has been elevated to a Post Graduate Medical Institute offering PG Degree and Diploma Courses in Anatomy, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Community Medicine, Microbiology, Pathology, General Medicine, General Surgery, Paediatrics, Orthopaedics. Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Psychiatry, Ophthalmology, TB & Chest, Anaesthesiology and Radiology.
Right from the start of the MES Medical College, MES Medicos are securing excellent results in the MBBS examination thereby reflecting the exemplary standard of the academic coaching we provide here through eminent and distinguished faculty members . MES Medicos had bagged first Ranks in First & Final MBBS Examinations in 2009 & 2011, leaving far behind the ‘so called’ meritorious students in Government Medical Colleges in Calicut & Thrissur.
True, MES has made tremendous achievements during a short spell of its existence thanks to the sacrifices as well as the committed and devoted ‘sweat and toil ‘ of thousands of active grass root level members of this prestigious organization. But we still feel that “ we have miles to go before we sleep…” We carry on the mantle of our mission under the inspiring leadership of Dr.P.A.Fazal Ghafoor, President, MES, to vehemently continue the uplift of the backward segments of the people of our nation educationally, economically and socially so that these segments can also stand on their foot and take control of their due and worthy place in the mainstream of our great nation’s march forward to achieve and fulfill the great dream – any higher aspiration – : a society that looks both forward and onwards always as well as holds itself to corrective standards, for the betterment of the whole people of our nation to which the MES humbly pledges and re-dedicates itself at the eve of this most auspicious Golden Jubilee Celebrations .
The primary vision of the Society is to work for the educational, social, and economic advancement of the people of India in all ways and the mission is to establish and administer colleges, schools, technical and Commercial Institutes, Kindergartens, Vocational Training Centres, Medical colleges, Dental Colleges, Paramedical Institutes, Adult Education Centres, Tailoring Schools, Food Craft Institutes, Computer Institutes, Community Development Centres, Human resources Development Institutes, Counseling Centres and any other educational institutions, either by the Society directly or in tie up or in collaboration with any other organizations, Universities, Corporate Bodies in India and abroad.
Signing an MoU with the Human Welfare Foundation, New Delhi to plan and set up Schools in educationally and economically backward areas of North Indian States Uttar Pradesh, Orissa and Bihar is another golden feather in the cap of MES. The first project of this joint venture was inaugurated by Dr.Fazal Ghafoor in April 2013 by laying foundation stone for a Health Centre and a School at the Harinkola village in the 24 pargaras District of the West Bengal. The aim of the project is to set up an educational health complex in villages of the 24 pargaras District, which is one of the most educational backward districts in the country as per Sachar Commission Report where people have to walk miles to get proper education and medical care. The project which is going to be commissioned in December 2014 will be a great boon for the very poor minority people living in and around the District.
Yes, MES is spreading its wings to soar to greater heights, to seek new horizons, to widen its reach , to reach out to the poor and to bring them to the mainstream of the society.
A society that dreamt of success but lost its way in utter darkness was badly in need of a navigator to drive them into the light of knowledge. The elementary lessons that lead to wisdom, that knowledge is power were unknown to society. The untiring efforts of a visionary group helped the society to step out to the path of wisdom. This unique set of people aspired for the overall development of a community and struggled against great odds to navigate them towards the mainstream of life.
The Muslim Educational Society, established in 1964 achieved a remarkable transformation in the educational status of Muslim and other backward communities. It was a socially committed and timely venture of a group of intellectuals led by Dr. P.K. Abdul Ghafoor, the Founder President of the Muslim Educational Society who dedicated his life for an educational revolution and pledged to keep the lamp of knowledge aloft to illuminate the life of a society.
Before the inception of MES, Muslims were extremely backward and lacked sufficient educational institutions and other amenities for learning. The herculian efforts made by the Muslim Educational society in conducting Seminars, Symposia and awareness meets throughout the length and breadth of Kerala drastically altered the outlook of the Society and their attitude towards education in particular.
And thus there emerged in the year 1964 this great organization, when the Muslim Educational Society was registered under the Charitable Societies Registration Act 1860 (Central Act XXI of 1860) under Regn. No. 54/1964. The Registered office of the MES (Regd) Calicut is at Bank Road, Calicut and has an approved bye-law. The most prominent aims and objectives of the Society as laid down in the Bye-laws are to work for the Educational,, Social, Cultural and Economic advancement of the people of India in all possible ways.
Then started the great saga of the mass movement for the uplift of the Muslim and backward Communities in Kerala. The subsequent years saw a radical overhaul of the educational field that was till then the privilege of a select few – the rich and the urbanites. There started the process of establishing a series of educational institutions under the banner of the Muslim Educational Society throwing open the doors of those institutions to the poor and the needy living till then miserably throughout the length and breadth of Kerala. While choosing the locale for each of its educational institution, the MES was very particular to ensure that it was at very remote and under-developed villages mainly in the backward and rural segments of the districts with a view to bring education in front of the door steps of the unfortunate poor and the deprived living in those areas, ignoring their financial viability. This is a rare phenomenon that MES alone ventured to experiment for the sake of eradicating illiteracy and poverty. Now this great institution has grown and spread into a vast horizon, running 150 institutions where 80000 students are studying for various courses and 15,000 employees serve for a great and humane cause. It is a matter of pride for MES that it has acquired assets worth 6000 Crores of rupees in properties and infrastructure for maintaining all these institutions. Now the Society has more than 20,000 members and 1 lakh sympathizers.
During the initial years, the Society’s main projects were for running the educational institutions alone . But as the years passed by, the need for stepping into the arena of social welfare was also felt for ensuring the Muslims their due share in the society. The scheme of awarding scholarships to the deserving students was its first such prioritised programme and it was a great success as there were tremendous response from the community and the well-wishers. Then the Society started diversifying its activities into new spheres and the organisation gradually extended its activities to all the districts of Kerala. As the MES was devoid of any political links, people from all walks of like joined its fold and very soon it became a major platform for all sections of Muslims to take up social welfare activities and start educational institutions.
Truly, MES has now become a Mass Movement – a movement committed to the benefit and development of the whole community. At the same time, it is an embodiment of communal harmony always treating other communities as their brethren and helping them also in alleviating poverty and backwardness. MES has a deep-rooted secular view.
MES has received wide acclaim from all leaders of various communities and political leaders in its charismatic and professional way of functioning and in its mass appeal amidst the community, without giving room for any controversies. It is worthwhile to remember here that in the All India MES National Conferences, former Prime Ministers of India, late Indira Gandhi and late Rajiv Gandhi have participated and praised the Society’s unselfish and devoted services to the poor and the drown-trodden. 7th All India Conference was attended by Smt. Indira Gandhi in 1984. In the All India Conference held at Delhi also Smt. Indira Gandhi was our honoured Guest. In the MES Silver Jubilee Celebrations held in1989, Mohammed Ali Clay ,the world Boxing Champion was the Chief Guest of Honour.
MES believes that this MANTLE of service that they now carry shall be further passed on from generation to generation , and that ‘ WE HAVE MILES TO GO AND PROMISES TO KEEP “
