Profile

The last five decades have been witnessing a remarkable and glorious transformation in the educational upbringing of the Muslims in Kerala, traditionally the most backward community in education. The driving force behind this envious achievement has been the committed and tiring toil of THE MUSLIM EDUCATIONAL SOCIETY (MES).

The movement started under the great leadership of late Dr. P.K.Abdul Gafoor in 1964 at Calicut, wholeheartedly supported by a large number of professionals and businessmen and in a short span of time this great movement had its branches spread to all districts in Kerala. As on today, it is the largest Educational organization in our nation with a strength of more than 20,000 active members, 85,000 students and staff members numbering 15000. It not only has Units in each and every District of Kerala, but also has stretched to neighbouring states as well to the Middle East countries

Overseas Units

As a large member of Kerala Muslim intellectuals, doctors, engineers, business men and workers employed or carrying out their own businesses in Middle East countries for the last three decades, there was natural formation of many MES units in different parts of Gulf countries viz. Kuwait, Riyadh, Jeddah, Oman, Salalah, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Sharjah, Fujairah, Doha & Qatar Units. These gulf units and MES have decided to establish combined projects in Kerala like engineering colleges and other institutions.

The first project of this kind is MES Arts College at Villyapally. The Kuwait unit is collaborating with the Calicut committee and has established a school at Atholi. The UAE unit is planning a major project in Kerala, but the major achievement being the establishment of MES Indian School, Doha in Qatar. The EDUCON- 2001 conducted at Dubai was a grand success with the presence and participation of many educationists from India and the gulf. The gulf committees are regularly conducting seminars, medical camps, quiz competitions and coaching classes

Founder

Founder Name

MES was founded by late Dr. Abdul Gafoor in 1964. The farsighted vision of that great personality did miracles with MES, and was the corner stone of all success that MES achieved through years ! Let us have a short look at the personal profile of Dr. Abdul Ghafoor.

Family

He was born on 25th December 1929 as son of Padiyath Manapatt Kochu Moideen Haji and Karukappadath Kunchachumma.

Education & Career

After completing his Graduation in 1951 from Alighar Muslim University he took the MBBS degree from Kerala University in 1957 (first batch of university). In 1958 he joined as the first tutor in Neurology at Kerala Govt. Medical College – Trivandrum. He took DTM &H from Edinburgh and worked as member staff of Edinburgh University under Prof.Norman Dutt and Prof.Simpson. He also obtained MRCP with specialisation in Neurology, and was promoted as Assistant Prof. Of medicine in Calicut Medical College. In 1971 he was promoted as Associate Professor at Calicut Medical College and he was awarded the FRCP in 1979.

An athlete champ, A Writer, An orator, A Co-ordinator

He was the Aligarh and Kerala University athletic champion .A powerful orator and writer who has authored the book “Rogangalum Rogikalum”. In 1964 Dr. Abdul Gafoor materialized the idea of Muslim Educational Society and became the founder President of MES. After setting up MES, he went to every nook and corner and established schools, colleges, hostels, orphanages, ITCs etc. He was instrumental in organizing the All India MES and he organized educational conferences in Bombay, Delhi Patna, Hyderabad etc.. in which eminent national leaders like Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Gyani Zail Singh, Zakir Hussain and Fakrudheen Ali Ahamed participated. These conferences gave a fillip to Muslim educational movements all over India. Dr Gafoor was a member of many international bodies like RABITHA and was able to draw their attention to the problems of Indian Muslims.

After having lead the Muslim educational movement for two decades with his magnetic charisma that attracted a generation, Dr. Abdul Gafoor passed away on 23rd May 1984 at the age of 54. But still the name itself is an inspiration and beacon not only for MES but for the Indian Muslims at large!.

About MES

It not only has Units in each and every District of Kerala, but also has stretched to neighbouring states as well to the Middle East countries.

IN THE FIELD OF PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION

In 1994, it was the setting up of the MES College of Engineering at Kuttippuram in Malappuram District, the first self-financing college in the private sector in Kerala, that kick started an historic revolution that was to follow in the state to promote education to the deprived class and MES has a real right and reason to be proud of this committed initiative to fulfill its mission. How aggressive and consistent was the growth that followed in the educational scenario of the state since then is part of history now . And in 2003, there emerged the MES flagship institution – the MES Academy of Medical Sciences, which now is comprising a Super specialty Post graduate Medical College, Dental College, College of Nursing, School of Nursing and institute of Para-medical sciences. The latest additions to the MES panel of professional institutions are the MES Institute of Technology and Management, Chathannur, Kollam, MES College of Engineering and Technology, Kunnukara, Ernakulam and MES College of Architecture, Kakkodi, Kozhikode.

Our Aided Post Graduate Colleges are accredited by the NAAC. All our colleges, including unaided self-financing colleges have consistently been achieving high percentage of results in the university examinations with many a student securing meritorious ranks.
